Gas Fireplace Maintenance Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the pilot light on my gas fireplace?

To find the pilot light, first locate the control panel. It is typically situated behind the front screen of the fireplace. For specific instructions, it’s best to consult your product manual.

Where is the gas valve on my fireplace?

There are two gas valves: one located in the firebox where the fireplace connects to the gas line, which can be tricky to find. The other is along the gas line that feeds the fireplace, usually within 4 to 6 feet of the fireplace. This valve is generally easier to access.

When do I need to close my gas fireplace flue?

The flue is permanently open.

How do I remove the glass from my fireplace?

Please consult your installation manual or user guide for your fireplace model to understand how the glass is attached and the instructions for removal.

How do I clean my glass?

It’s best to clean your glass after the first 3 hours of burn time, as failing to do so can cause permanent etching.

  1. Make sure the glass has completely cooled, and consider turning off the gas while servicing your appliance.
  2. Remove the front face or louvers of your fireplace, then carefully take out the glass assembly following your manual’s instructions, and place it on a soft surface.
  3. Clean both sides with a household glass cleaner (avoid products containing ammonia) using a soft cloth.
  4. For heavy deposits, use a recommended hard water glass cleaner.
  5. Carefully reattach the glass to the front of the fireplace according to your manual, ensuring the glass assembly and front are secure.
  6. After this initial cleaning, clean your glass as often as needed, especially after adding new ember material. Always avoid using abrasive cleaners or cloths, as scratching can lead to glass shattering.
How often do I have to clean the gas fireplace and vent?

The frequency of your fireplace maintenance will depend on usage and the type of installation. However, it is recommended to have a qualified technician perform a check-up at the beginning of each heating season.

Should I have an inspection performed on my fireplace, stove, or insert?

Yes, we recommend having one of our qualified technicians service your fireplace, stove, or insert annually to ensure proper functioning.

Why is my gas fireplace not igniting?

Common causes for a gas fireplace not igniting include a faulty ignition system, thermocouple issues, pilot light problems, or blocked gas lines or insufficient gas pressure. At Rose City Fireplaces, our team can quickly diagnose the problem and get your fireplace working properly again.

Can a gas fireplace be used during a power outage?

Yes, many gas fireplaces can still function during a power outage, especially those equipped with a standing pilot light or a battery backup system. These features allow the fireplace to operate even when electricity is unavailable.
